Grape vs Grain at Hop ‘n Vine

How a grape vs grain judging should look

Remember Grape vs Grain? The beer vs wine food pairing show where I attempt to take down wine goddess Cathy Marston. Well, OK, I’m not trying to take her down, but I am trying to show people that beer pairs just as well with food as wine does. Oh OK, it pairs better. Way better.

Last year we took our show to Taste of Cape Town, Good Food and Wine and the Cheese Festival among others and we’re bringing it back at this year’s Hop ‘n Vine Festival, taking place from July 31st to August 2nd at The River Club.

Join us on Saturday at 3pm and 4.30pm and on Sunday at noon for the interactive show where you, dear booze enthusiast, get to decide who wins. Cathy has a big hitter in her corner – 330-year-old Cape winery Groot Constantia but I’m confident I can take on the old with the new – the new being a trio of Cape craft beers (stay tuned this week for details on which breweries). It’s very fitting that Groot Constantia should be a part of Grape vs Grain at the long-awaited return of Hop ‘n Vine – the original festival was held at the historic estate’s Simon’s Restaurant back in 2012.

Entrance to Grape vs Grain is free and includes three beer tasters, three wine tasters and three canapes, but seats are limited so get there early to avoid disappointment! And be sure to bring your phone so we can continue the debate on social media (#GrapevsGrain).

May the best-paired beverage win! (By which, of course, I mean beer).
