In previous years for Women’s Day, I have penned pieces on women in the South African beer scene and also on the whole phenomenon of ‘beer for women‘. Well, it’s Women’s Day again (happy day ladies) and what with it being International Beer Day last Friday (sorry, no blog post – too hungover from IPA day) I have a very tenuously-linked blog post for you. It’s basically a fluff Sunday easy-reading thing about how people stumble across my blog. Y’know, cause I’m a woman. And I write about beer. I’m always amused by the search terms people have punched in to end up on my site. Here are some of my favourites:
The most popular, by far
“castle milk stout chocolate” – or many variations on the theme. More people end up on my blog searching for SAB’s chocolate stout than for any other search term. Followed, oddly enough I think, by “beer festival port elizabeth”. PE clearly wants more fests, folks – someone get on that!
The most badly spelled
Got to be a toss-up between “niewoudtsusters cider brew” and “jokers beer steelenbrau tastes”.
The wishful thinker
“heady topper south africa” – if only!
The one that me lol, then made me sad
“why does south african beer taste so crap” – Not sure what’s worse, the fact they typed this into a search engine or the fact that they then ended up on my blog…
The challenge
“describe castle 1892 draught in one word” – well, go on then…(responses welcomed in the comments!)
The eternal question
“does castle lite make you fat?” – I will attempt to answer this in a future blog post.

The one i’d be keen to hear your thoughts on
“should home brewers keep craft beer more simple?” (thoughts in the comments section please – perhaps brewers should all be mastering blonde ales and English bitters instead of tackling herb infused, barrel-aged hybrids…)
So there you have it. A completely pointless blog post that hopefully kept you entertained for three minutes on a lazy Sunday afternoon…
Ah, the old “does beer make you fat?” question. One of my two favourite things in life requires me to be as lean as possible with as great a strength-to-body-weight ratio as possible (rock climbing), and the other, well, no requirements at all other than pouring it down your throat (beer). The stuggle is real, but manageable.
Haha – I;m sure the former cancels out the latter!! It’s all a myth anyway. Beer gives you muscles.
