It’s time to celebrate the most bestest beverage on earth! February 2nd marks the third annual South African National Beer Day – and it’s going to be the biggest yet!
The idea of the day is simple – to celebrate our national beverage. Don’t ever let people fool you into thinking that South Africa is a wine-drinking nation. Sure we produce excellent wine – and we drink a fair amount of it too. But when it comes to our favourite tipple, it is resoundingly beer. This Vinpro article is a couple of years old, but sums up the situation nicely: “At 76% of total litres alcoholic beverage consumed in 2016, beer remains by far the most popular alcoholic beverage in SA and internationally where it stands at 75%.” And let’s not forget this great round up from Stats SA on just how popular beer is in South Africa. Yep – it is more popular than vegetables.
So since we love beer so much, we needed a day to celebrate it. International Beer Day falls in the middle of our winter, so after consulting those in the industry I launched #SANBeerDay in 2017. It is everyone’s day – anyone can host an event anywhere. It could be a special at your local bottle store, a mini fest in a brewpub, an open day at a microbrewery, a food and beer pairing at a neighbourhood restaurant or a braai in your back garden with good mates and great beers. And it’s not just about craft beer. Big beer, small beer, sorghum beer, homebrew…it is a day to celebrate South African beer, regardless of who produces it.
Events are listed on a map on the official SANBeerDay website, as well as on the South African National Beer Day Facebook page, so check out what’s going on and clear your diary for the day. We had nearly 60 events listed in the first year, close to 80 last year and this year we’re shooting for that century mark. The list currently stands at 83, so if you’re planning an event or special and haven’t listed it yet, please fill in the form here.
On the day, post your pics, share the beer love and tag it all with #SANBeerDay so we can all see how much you’re enjoying that wonderful beverage that is beer.
