As winter inches closer, beer geeks’ fridges are being emptied of pilsners and witbiers then restocked with Russian imperial stouts, imperial IPAs and Belgian dubbels. If you’re in Cape Town there are plenty of the latter at Den Anker, The Waterfront institution is sometimes thought of as more of a tourist hang-out than a locals’ haunt, but I don’t need to tell you that their Belgian beer selection is unrivalled. And starting from June 1st, Den Anker has daily winter specials to lure you away from your fireplace and into a goblet of Trappist ale. Here’s the lowdown on what’s on offer:
Moules Monday: A kilo of mussels – served with chips of course – will cost just R100. (A beer to pair with them is extra – try a trippel or something blonde).
Trappist Tuesday: When you order one of Den Anker’s Trappist ales (they have beers from all the Belgian Trappist breweries except for Westvleteren) you get a mini cheese platter to pair it with. Make sure you’ve got a ride home, because you might well want to try a few of the beers to decide which pairs best with the cheese…
Weight-loss Wednesday: Banting meals are on the menu, served with a glass of wine for R90.
Thirsty Thursday: If wine isn’t your thing, drop by Den Anker on Thursday to taste the full range of Belgian draught beers for R50.
Fishy Friday: Also has a beery theme – you get a Vedett White with your fish and frites for just R90.
Spanish Saturday: Sample three tapas treats for R120 (and pick a beer to pair them with – for an extra fee…)
Sunday Savings: Gives you an excuse to take the family out to a beer tasting – the under 10s eat for free with each adult meal ordered (they also have goodie bags to keep kids entertained while you’re sniffing and sipping).
The Den Anker Winter Warmer promotion starts on June 1st and ends on August 31st.
