South African Beer Festivals and Events 2014

Here’s an ongoing list of the beer festivals/events still to come in South Africa in 2014. Please contact me if you know about something that I don’t. Thanks!

Cape Town & The Western Cape

CBC Oktoberfest

When: October 3rd-12th, 10am-6pm
Where: Cape Brewing Company, Paarl
What: Plenty of CBC beer on tap, buffet featuring traditional Oktoberfest goodies and an oompah band on weekends.
How much: R50, which includes a beer mug and one beer. Entry is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Grape vs Grain dinner

When: October 10th
Where: Harveys at Winchester Mansions, Sea Point
What: Your very own Brewmistress goes head to head with wino Cathy Marston in a five-course, head-to-head beer vs wine interactive food pairing evening
How much: R395 per person

Craft Beer Tasting Club, Inaugural Meeting

When: October 17th, 6.30pm
Where: Devil’s Peak Tap Room, Salt River
What: Brought to you by The Beer Club and The Craft Beer Researcher, this is the first meeting of  new beer appreciation club.  Aimed at experts and beerginners alike, grab some friends and join for a night of good friends, food and brews.Signed copies of African Brew will also be on sale for a special price.  For more information or for bookings, email beerclubsa@gmail.com and follow @bestclubsa, @wayneCPT and @beerclubsa
How much: R200, which includes tasters of the Devil’s Peak beers, any meal from their menu, plus a couple of homebrews thrown in.

Bierfest

When: November 14th-16th
Where: Newlands Brewery
What: Steins of beer, oompah band, pretzels, buxom wenches – SA’s answer to Oktoberfest
How much: From R125 per person (more expensive tickets include beers and other goodies)

Cape Town Festival of Beer

When: November 29th-30th
Where: Hamilton’s Rugby Club, Green Point
What: The biggest beer festival in the country, with well over 200 beers both local and imported, food, music, games and a bit more beer…
How much: R150 in advance

Castle Rock Craft Beer, Wine & Cider Experience

When: October 31st & November 1st
Where: Olive Rock Wedding & Function Venue (Fri) and Winterberg Mountain Inn (Sat), near Ceres
What: Kicks off with a craft beer and food pairing evening on Friday, then a beer, wine and cider festival on Saturday with an organic market and plenty for kids to do.
How much: Friday’s food pairing evening is R300. Tickets for Saturday R50 (under 18s R20).

Durbanville Beer Festival

When: December – date TBA
Where: Hillcrest Wine Estate, Durbanville
What: Details to follow
How much: TBA

Gauteng

Soweto unfiltered…unplugged

When: October 18th-19th, 10am – 10pm
Where: Ubuntu Kraal, Orlando West, Soweto
What: Craft beer, cider and music festival featuring beers from at least seven breweries
How much: R125 online, R150 at the door

Bierfest

When: October 17th-19th AND 24th-26th
Where: Montecasino, Jo’burg
What: Steins of beer, oompah band, pretzels, buxom wenches – SA’s answer to Oktoberfest
How much: From R125 per person (more expensive tickets include beers and other goodies)

north west

Maftown Beer Festival

When: November 1st
Where: Mmabatho Stadium, Mafikeng
What: Beers from SAB (not sure about craft brewers?), cider, cocktails, wine, lots of live music.
How much: General tickets R100, VIP tickets R350.

KZN

Burnedale Craft Beer Festival

When: October 11th, 11am-8pm
Where: Burnedale Farmers Market, Umhlali
What: A family-friendly festival featuring local brews, live music and the like.
How much: R120 through WEbstickets or R150 on the tour. Entrance includes a glass and five tasters.

eastern cape

Grapes & Grain Fest

When: November 15th
Where: German Club, Lorraine Port Elizabeth
What: Beers from 10 microbreweries, craft ciders, wines from a dozen vineyards, beer pong, live music.
How much: R89 from Quicket.
