Win tickets to the annual Southyeasters Summer Fest

I am utterly biased of course, but I have long thought that the Southyeasters Summer Fest is one of the best beer festivals in South Africa. It’s one of the few that really is all about the beer. You grab a tasting glass on your way in and you do the rounds, gradually tasting every beer on show (or at least, as many as you can manage). No-one is selling their beer, so there are no “come to my stand” gimmicks like beer pong or hop shots or hot girls hired simply to sell more pints. The brewers are all homebrewers and for many of them, they simply want to share their brews with the public. Some of course do use the festival as a launchpad, with many going on to open their own breweries, including Triggerfish, Honingklip, Gallows Hill, Dissident, Afro Caribbean, Buurman, Zebonkey, Atlantic Storm, Lakeside, Stickman and way back in the day, Boston.

The festival – one of SA’s oldest – takes place this Sunday, March 25th at Jack Black’s Brewing Co. in Diep River from 11am. If you’ve never had the great pleasure of attending, here’s how it works: on entry you get a tasting glass and a marble. As you go around, you take mental notes (or indeed, the more serious beer tasters take actual notes) and once you’ve picked your personal best-in-show, you drop your marble into that brewer’s cup. At around 3pm, the winner of the people’s choice competiion will be announced and prizes galore will be bestowed upon him.

There will be food trucks (including the epically named Truck Norris) and a small kids’ area, ideal for the under 7s. Jack Black’s bar will be open for pints and glasses of wine (if you must!) and the Southyeasters DJ, Nick Birkby, will be playing chilled tunes and classic rock.

And if that doesn’t sound perfect enough, I have two tickets to give away! You can enter on Facebook or Twitter, or indeed, both! To enter on Twitter, simply tweet this:

I want to win two tickets to the @Southyeasters Summer Festival in Cape Town this Sunday so I can learn about beer and taste the best homebrew in the land! RT to win

To enter on Facebook, head on over and follow the instructions on the pinned post… Winners announced on Friday morning.

For the rest, tickets are available on Quicket for R120 (or if you get moving, there are early bird tickets available until the end of Tuesday for R100).

See you there!

Do you think my 5 year old daughter will notice if I duck out of her birthday party and make for Diep River…?! Very disappointed to be missing this – always a brilliant event, made even more epic with the addition of Truck Norris!

That’s poor planning on your part Nik – you should have had her party at Jack Black. Get your priorities straight next year πŸ˜‰

        You’re right. I’ve let myself down…but worse still…I’ve let beer down. πŸ™‚
