South African ladies celebrate International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day

Girls just wanna have…a good pint of beer

For the first time, the ladies of the South African beer industry will join together to celebrate International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day on March 8th, 2016 and are inviting South African women to join the fun!

Craft brewers, homebrewers and beer enthusiasts will join together at brewpubs in Johannesburg and Cape Town to brew separate batches of the same recipe: a pale ale named for the South African hop it will feature, African Queen.

The events will take place simultaneously at Copperlake Breweries’ brewpub in Broadacres, Johannesburg and Afro Caribbean Brewing Company, the upstairs brewpub at Banana Jam Café in Kenilworth, Cape Town. Kicking off at 10am, ladies from Brewhogs, Brauhaus am Damm, Black Horse, Clockwork, Cape Brewing Company, Honingklip, Darling, Two Okes, BeerLab and more will create small batches of the hop-forward pale ale.

Apiwe Nxusani-Mawela, brew master at Johannesburg-based Brewhogs is spearheading the initiative. “March 8th is marked as International Women’s Day,” Apiwe explains. “On this day women across the globe, from all walks of life celebrate their achievements and diversity. Women within the brewing industry celebrate by organising a collaboration brew, which takes place simultaneously across the globe.  I thought it would be a great idea to start a South African version of this world-wide event to get ladies in the brewing industry together to socialise and network.”

The goal is to get more women interested in beer and anyone wanting to learn a little more about beer or brewing is invited to drop by. Whether you just join to throw a handful of hops into the boil or stick around for the full day, all are welcome (men too, of course!)

At 1pm, there will be a short talk on women in the brewing industry and a tutored tasting of four beers, sponsored by League of Beers. Apiwe will host the Johannesburg tasting, while I will be talking Cape Town tasters through the beer samples. The beer brewed on the day will later be served on tap at Banana Jam and at Copperlake.

Skip out of work for an hour and swing by to talk beer, brew beer and if you think your boss will be OK with it, taste beer!
