12 Days of Beermas: exclusive blog subscriber prize

It is time to reward those who are most loyal to the Brewmistress – you the subscribers to the blog.

ssbss beer snobsToday’s Cape-based prize is an exclusive chance to be a member of the SSBSS for the day. The SSBSS (Southern Suburbs Beer Snob Society) is a beer appreciation club that gets hold of never-before-tasted-in-SA beers…and then tastes them! Members include Rob Heyns of League of Beers, Greg Casey of Banana Jam, Shawn and Troye (past and present Southyeasters presidents), JC and Al (DP brewers) and plenty of other beer nerds representing CBC, Jack Black, Lakeside, Beerhouse, The Craft Beer Project, BrewDogZA. And me. I’m a member too.

Our next meetup (after the xmas party that is) will be in mid-Jan 2015. The meeting will coincide with the arrival of whole new range of beers imported from the States, including brews from Brooklyn Brewery, Miami Brewing Co, Anchor and Harpoon.

The prize is to join us and be among the first to taste these beers. It also includes dinner (at Banana Jam) and an evening talking about nothing but beer (with a bit of piss-taking likely thrown in for good measure. OK, a lot of piss-taking, but it’s usually aimed at Rob…).

There can only be one winner. To enter, comment on this post and tell me what makes you a beer snob (which is really more of a beer nerd to be honest – you don’t have to pee in cans of Budweiser or make fun of others for their beer choices).

What make a me a beer snob. It is easier to make then wine and the flavour profiles are limitless. I been getting friends from all over the world to try bring me new beers I never get in this country from stone to dogfishhead. Why I would like to spend the day with everyone. To at amongst like minded friends and further my knowledge and understanding of beer. Flavours. Experiences. Giving me a better insight to helping me conceive new recipes for my homebrews. Beer is not just beer. Beer creates new friendships and experiences.

Brilliant. I eat, drink and sleep beer! Converted wine fanatic. Always keen to learn and taste more beer. And meeting like minded people. My living room is my brewery. Beer people are less “clicky” than wine people and thats why I love it. Oneday I will have my own brewery. FACT!!

I co-founded Beer Club SA, so we could turn more people into beer nerds so that we have more people to talk to. I spend my days reading about beer and go home and create recipes to homebrew. I spend inordinate amounts of money on beer (local and imported alike) so I can educate my palate more and talk to others that can also say they have drunk that beer. I spent R500 making 13 litres of beer to test a recipe I had (clone for Pliny if you must know). I studied for the BJCP exam (unfortunately couldn’t write) so I could formalise my beer nerdiness. My wife knows almost as much about beer as I do because I keep talking about it, not because she’s interested (she even started a whatsapp group called Beer Widows). When I’m not talking about beer, I’m drinking beer and when I’m not doing that, I’m on Twitter drooling at all the pictures people post of the vast array of beers available (can’t wait to try Sriracha stout).

I love beer too much not to be a beer snob. I am always trying new beers and who doesn’t like being the one to recommend a delicious beer to your beer loving friends!

I suppose the main reason would be that whenever i open a beer i force my wife and whomever is around to have a taste of it and then i start pointing out flavours and subtle details of the beer in an authoritative voice like i know what i am talking about like: ” ooh can you taste toffee /caramel notes on this (insert craft beer name here)” or “you see its the yeast that adds the main flavour characteristics of this Weiss” etc etc etc…… I could go on and on. Basically I need to up my beer snobbery bullshit vocab and i reckon the SSBSS might just be the place to get some pointers. oh and I prefer English IPA to American IPA.

I just wanna hang with the cool kids! But seriously, to be involved in a tasting with some of the best beer minds South Africa has to offer will be totally amazing! Since I started brewing, my palate has developed remarkably, I used to think that Amstel was bitter, now I can taste the underlying Malt sweetness! I suppose I am a beer snob, not because I only drink craft, I enjoy a mass produced lager if the mood or occasion suits, but because I get excited about tasting new beers and new styles! That and I love the beer culture we are developing and am excited to be a part of it.

I have driven 1500 km to try a single beer (Founder’s Canadian Breakfast Stout) and it was worth every km. I am working on trying every beer in Beer Advocate’s Top 250 list and Rate Beer’s top 50 list – something that will take a while living in Cape Town, but a very worthwhile goal for any beer nerd. I have managed to try Rate Beer’s top APA, 3 of the 5 top IPA’s, 2 of the top five imperial IPAs and 7 of the top 15 imperial stouts (served in a snifter of course).

Ah man, this was really tough. But for various reasons – not least because he was the second ever person to subscribe to the blog (the first being Megan Gemmell from Clockwork Brewhouse), the person who will be joining for a premiere of the new US beers iiiiiiiiiiiisssss:

    Brett Ross.

Congrats Brett. And to the other beer snobs, thanks so much for entering and for supporting the blog this year (and the beer industry in general). For each of you I have sourced a R150 voucher for League of Beers 😀
