Beer events happening around South Africa this weekend

It’s a big weekend for beer. Thursday (5 August) is IPA Day, Friday is, somewhat inconveniently considering the usual IPA-induced hangover, International Beer Day and then you have a couple of rest days before Women’s Day on Monday. All of this coincides with the lifting of the alcohol ban and the reopening of restaurants, so it’s all cause for celebration.

Please celebrate responsibly though – wear a mask if you’re not at your table, avoid crowds and of course drink responsibly: hydrate, eat food, Uber home. Our industry has seriously suffered over the past year and acts of drunken stupidity will do nothing to help the cause to keep the alcohol and hospitality industries open.

Right then. Without further ado, here’s what’s happening when and where:

IPA Day (5 August)

Afro Caribbean Brewing Co., Cape Town

Eight IPAs on tap, including a limited release collab with Long Beach as well as Space Llama, winner of the Best Beer in Africa at the 2021 African Beer Cup. IPA-inspired food specials. Free entry. 4pm-9pm. More info here.

Capital Craft, Pretoria

Buy one get one free on Lagunitas IPA while stocks last. More info here.

Darling Brewery Tasteroom, Woodstock

Brewer vs Brewer IPA challenge. Each of Darling’s brewers, brewmaster and trainees in Darling have brewed a keg of unique IPA for IPA day 2021, including an orange IPA, brown chaiPA and a few classics. Purchase a flight of 5 x 100ml tasters at the Woodstock Tasteroom for R55 and vote for your favourite. Available from IPA Day 5 August to Women’s Day 9 August.

Soul Barrel Brewing, Simondium

Drop into Soul Barrel at any time over the long weekend to taste a pretty cool special release. “To celebrate this historic style, we recreated an 18th century imperial IPA, aging it in french oak with a few Brettanomyces strains for three years, then recharging it with a fresh, hoppy batch. Join us for a taste of history!” says Soul Barrel’s owner Nick Smith. Their usual IPAs will also be on tap of course. Open 11am-6pm.

Stumpnose Brewery, Kloof (KZN)

Specials on three draught IPAs: Fisherman, Yeah Buoy and Lagunitas.

1000 Hills Brewery, Botha’s Hill

Not altogether IPA-related, but beery nonetheless. Join the Durban Homebrewers for their monthly meetup. Clockwork Brewhouse’s Megan Gemmell will be doing a talk on yeast. You can also catch the meeting online – it will be broadcast live on YouTube from 18:30.

International Beer Day (6 August)

Featherstone Brewery @ Olde65 Pub and Restaurant , Makhanda (Grahamstown)

Featherstone Brewery and Entrepid Brewery are celebrating International Beer Day at Olde65. Expect free tastings, learn more about the art of craft brewing and enjoy Oktoberfest inspired entertainment. From 6pm. More info here.

Lilypatrick Craft Brewery, Stellenbosch

The FB page is a little light on info, but expect specials on beer and food on International Beer Day and Women’s Day. More info (but not much) here.

Tolokazi Beer @ The Box Shop, Soweto

Vilakazi bike tour, a range of DJs, Bazala art bar and Tolokazi beer.

Saturday (7 August)

Agar’s Brewery, Johannesburg

It’s bottomless beer day at Agar’s. Watch the rugby and sip on Agar’s ales all afternoon for R225. Bring & braai, live music. Designated driver ESSENTIAL!!

Long Beach Brewery, Noordhoek

Mass homebrew day! The Long Beach/Charlie’s Garage team are attempting to create a world record for the largest number of homebrewers brewing the same beer under one roof. Register via WhatsApp on 067 329 0169. Tickets are R200 which includes ingredients for the brew. BYO brew kit! There’s also going to be nothing but IPAs on tap from Thursday to Sunday. More info here.

Women’s Day (9 August)

Burgundy Restaurant, Hermanus

Not a beer event but it is a cool one, with the backing of a brewery…. Join the team from The Brewery at Hemel-en-Aarde for a sandwich drive, making butties for Ladles of Love. The goal is to make 10,000 sandwiches throughout the day. The buttering begins at 10am. Be sure to pop in to The Brewery afterwards if you’re lucky their delectable, gold medal winning nitro stout will be on tap…

Watch this space… I am really hoping to fill it with breweries doing cool stuff for Women’s Day. Those forgetting that they’re a brewery and only offering specials on cocktails, cider and wine need not apply…

Please get in touch if you know of something that should be added to the list.
