Afro Caribbean Brewing Co. is fairly well known for its quirky beer names. Many of them, like Hubba Bubba Habba Nero, Dragonberry Kaleidoscope and Disco Hop Party are simply the everyday output of ACBC owner Greg Casey’s overactive brain. Others, like Quick Hands and Space Llama have a backstory. And ACBC’s latest special release, Hablando Español, also comes with an origin tale.

It begins one Wednesday evening when Señor Casey arrives home from an evening of imbibing his own product (specifically, I believe, a few pints of the probably rather inaptly named ‘Better Judgement’). On arrival, he rambled on to his sober better half in that irritating way we all do, and the following morning she informed him he came home so incoherent he might as well have been speaking Spanish. What a great name, thought Casey, and so the concept for ACBC’s next limited edition beer was born.

At 8% ABV, you could see how it might cause a person to speak in tongues after a few, but I am not convinced that Hablando Español really lives up to its name. I’m drinking it right now and I’m bastante sure that I am still speaking inglés quite coherently. I actually used to live in Spain and was once fluent in Spanish but I’m not sure I believe que bebiendo unas latas of Hablando will ayudarme in recovering the vocab que he perdido. I mean, how could it? How could una cerveza possiblemente ayudarte hablar otro idioma?

Pero da igual. Aunque no pueda hacer milagros, es todavía una cerveza buena. “IPA brumoso” segun la lata – para los como tu y yo quien habla inglés , es un NEIPA. Y es seriamente brumoso – no se puede ve los dedos a través del vaso. Pero aunque tenga pinta de un NEIPA, para mi falta algo de la aroma típica – es mas dank que juicy (incluso despues de dos o tres, no tengo ni idea como decir ‘dank’ or ‘juicy’ en español – hay que vaciar un barril por esto!). Mi primera impressión fue que tenía aroma de porro. Y no es decir que no me gusta. Aunque raramente fume, a mi me encanta el olor de maijuana, particularmente en un IPA. Solo quiero decir que Hablando Español no tiene el aroma típico de un NEIPA. Hay un olor de zumo de mango tambien, pero is sutil. De hecho, aroma abundante no hay en esta NEIPA.

Es tambien mas amargo que lo esperas para el estilo, y por eso me encanta. No soy aficionado de les IPA que faltan amargura y aunque Hablando Español tampoco sea exessivamente amargo, no es dulce como algunos NEIPAs. Es facil de beber y bastante refrescante. En breve es una cerveza bastante peligrosa porque no sabe como 8%. Vas a encantarla. La entrego 3.7/5.

No sé cuantas hay que beber para poder hablar Español pero obviamente no he consumido bastante porque aun estoy claramente escribiendo en inglés. Se puede pedir ahora en el Afro Caribbean sitio web para colecciòn o entrega cuando el gobierno lo permite. Y cuando lo pruebes, mandarme un Tweet, mensaje del Facebook o un comentario debajo para ver si esta cerveza de verdad puede assistir en dominar otra lengua.
