Beer Boot Camp featuring John Palmer

Every year around mid-Feb I roll out some vaguely Valentiney blog post like how to pair beer with chocolate or how to choose a beer that will help you get what you want on Valentine’s Day. Well I’m not going to do that this year. Instead I’m going to point you in the direction of what could be the most awesome gift you could ever buy for a beer lover for Valentine’s Day. Or a birthday. Or Christmas. Or International Beer Day. Or indeed, for my Pastafarian readers, International Talk like a Pirate Day.

beer boot campIf you love a beer lover, buy them a ticket to Beer Boot Camp, taking place in Johannesburg on July 4th, 2015. It’s a one day beer indaba for brewers seeking to know more about their craft. And it features some truly awesome speakers. Kicking off the day, with a session over Skype, is Dr Brad Smith, creator of BeerSmith, who will be talking recipe development. Next up are sessions looking in detail at hops and yeast, plus a Q&A panel with some top SA brewers.

Later in the day, Ian Jones of Global Beverage Solutions will be discussing brewing troubleshooting and off-flavours and I will also be there, talking beer styles and tasting tips. But as awesome as we all are, it is the keynote speaker that you’ll be particularly keen to hear – the legendary John Palmer himself. As author of the homebrewing bible, How to Brew, I suppose it’s fair to refer to him as a homebrewing god. And he will be right here in South Africa – you might even get to ask him a question or two.

The day rounds off with a beer and chocolate pairing and a cocktail party, where you’ll be able to chat to the presenters and ask any questions you didn’t feel like shouting out in front of a room full of delegates.

It’s incredibly reasonably-priced at R800 for the full day, including lunch and the cocktail party. So if you do really love a beer lover, get them a ticket. Now.

Beer Boot Camp takes place on July 4th at Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg. For full details and to buy a ticket for your beerloved, visit their website or follow them on Twitter.

Where can I get an overview of the global market for craft beer?
In your opinion (and other readers) what countries have peeked and what markets are emerging for S. Africa export?
